A Pittsburgh police officer from Zone 3 pulled over the man on suspicion of a DUI at the intersection of McKinley Street and Grogan Avenue in the Knoxville neighborhood.
The officer got out of his vehicle and spoke with the suspect who identified himself as Charles Raymond Daniels, but could not provide a driver's license.
Daniels then suddenly sped off, striking the officer in the leg, according to the release.
That didn't stop the officer who followed the vehicle as it turned down a dead end in the 700 block of Margaret Street in Mount Oliver, hitting a tree.
Daniels suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital by EMS to be medically cleared before transfer to the Allegheny County Jail, according to the release.
"The officer was not seriously injured and was not transported to the hospital," he was evaluated by medics on scene, Cruz told Daily Voice.
"A large amount of narcotics was recovered from inside the vehicle," as stated in the release.
He was wanted on a warrant in connection with drug charges filed against him in 2021, according to court documents.
Daniels has 24 charges filed against him for the incident on Friday, including three felonies for assault, fleeing, and possession with intent to deliver, among the numerous offenses, court records show.
His preliminary hearing has yet to be scheduled as his arraignment was pending at the time of this publication.
